NDT Testing Services: Rebound Hammer & UPV

NABL documentation and NDT scope

Clients sometimes request NABL laboratory documentation together with Rebound Hammer or UPV testing. Accreditation status is method- and location-specific, so the requested on-site test and any associated laboratory parameters are checked against the current applicable scope before quotation. Ask for the current certificate, scope and identity of the reporting laboratory.

Rebound Hammer test

A Rebound Hammer provides comparative information related to the surface hardness of concrete. A test layout should account for member type, surface condition, orientation, carbonation, moisture, age and locations affected by defects or repairs. Results should not be treated as a direct replacement for standard concrete strength testing.

Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test

UPV measures the travel of an ultrasonic pulse through concrete between transducers. It is used to study uniformity, identify anomalous zones and compare pulse velocity across a structure. Access arrangement, path length, reinforcement, moisture, surface coupling and test geometry influence the observation.

Using Rebound Hammer and UPV together

Combined testing provides a more balanced screening assessment than either method alone. Rebound Hammer is influenced mainly by the near-surface zone, while UPV evaluates pulse transmission along the selected path. Engineering conclusions should also consider drawings, material records, distress mapping, exposure and—where justified—core or other confirmatory testing.

Method references and planning

Testing is commonly planned with reference to IS 13311 Part 1 for UPV and IS 13311 Part 2 for Rebound Hammer, together with the project brief and current applicable revisions. Before mobilization, PDCE confirms the members, grid or test locations, access, surface preparation, expected quantity, reporting purpose and witnessing requirement.

Other coordinated concrete investigation services

Depending on the engineering objective, the investigation may include rebar scanning, cover-depth checks, carbonation depth, half-cell potential, concrete resistivity, core extraction/testing, crack mapping or chemical analysis. These are selected because they answer different questions; they should not be added as an undirected checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can Rebound Hammer give exact concrete compressive strength?

It provides an indirect estimate or comparison and is affected by several site variables. Project-specific correlation and confirmatory evidence may be necessary for a defensible strength assessment.

Does high UPV always mean the concrete is strong?

No. UPV primarily indicates pulse transmission and uniformity. Mix, moisture, reinforcement and path geometry affect the value, so it should not be interpreted as compressive strength by itself.

How many test locations are required?

The quantity depends on structure size, member types, variability, observed distress and the purpose of the assessment. A test layout should be agreed before mobilisation.
