NABL scope for road material testing
When NABL laboratory testing for road materials is specified, the requested material, parameter and method are matched to the current accreditation scope of the reporting laboratory. Request the current certificate and scope; coverage for soil, aggregate or bitumen parameters must be verified individually.

Subgrade and embankment soil
- Particle-size distribution, moisture content and plasticity.
- Compaction characteristics and California Bearing Ratio (CBR).

Granular sub-base and base materials

Standards and project requirements
Road material testing commonly refers to MoRTH specifications, relevant parts of IS 2720 and IS 2386, and the applicable methods for paving bitumen or bituminous mixtures. The latest contractually adopted edition and project acceptance limits should be supplied with the test request.
Laboratory and field testing work together
Laboratory results describe submitted samples. Field density, plate-load or pavement-condition measurements describe in-situ conditions. Representative sampling, chainage/location records, layer identification and field observations are essential when results will support acceptance or forensic investigation.
Frequently asked questions
Is CBR enough to approve a subgrade?
CBR is important, but the specification may also require grading, plasticity, compaction and swell-related properties. Approval should follow the complete project requirement.
Can existing pavement condition be assessed in the laboratory?
Laboratory testing can examine recovered samples, but a pavement investigation may also require visual distress mapping, cores, field density, FWD or other site measurements.
What sample identification is needed?
Record project, source, layer, chainage/location, date, lot and sampling personnel. Bituminous samples should also identify the mix and relevant batch or plant details.
